in the spring of '07

In the spring semester of 2007, Mark and I made the mistake of taking Micro Economics together.

Everyone knows that it's a bad idea to take a class with the person you're madly in love with. That's just asking for it.

Of course, we were good students and paid close attention, took notes, and studied each night.

Ok. Maybe we didn't. But we did do some of this:

What is all of that madness? Well, you have two people coming from South Central Kentucky.

(That's us)

Along with:
John 3:16
a head with tons of curly hair (me!)
knuckle wrinkles
his name

and on my hand, it reads: Nibbles loves Puppy (read: Shannon loves Mark)

with a puppy on my hand.

If college isn't about finding your spouse, taking a class together, and totally not paying attention at all (but coming out with a B.. somehow), I don't know what it is about

2007 was a good year!

new blog update:

Mark and I have been cleaning our entire house today. But we're taking a break to announce a new edition to Fort Cox:

We've added a TwitPics gadget to the bottom right-hand side. Right above the Archives section. Go ahead. Scroll down and look to the right. You'll see Mark with his gigantic burger from Five Guys. We love to take pictures, and our new iPhone takes incredibly sharp images for, well, a phone. So we'll keep you totally updated on everything from now on! Enjoy!

Love,

US!

new lens & a movie

Mark and I really love and enjoy photography. I especially love photographing my two favorite children on the face of this earth (C&H), but I also love photographing our dog. And, sometimes, we love photographing each other.

We just got our new lens (50mm f/1.8) last week, and we love it! It's crisp, clean, and blurs backgrounds with ease.

We have a lot of fun upcoming events that will truly put this lens to the test! Thanksgiving is coming up, and we cannot wait. That's actually an understatement. We are very very very very excited!

----------------------------------------

In other news, we saw New Moon last night! We ventured to our favorite spot: the Cinema Cafe, where order actual meals and sit in the theater. We really loved the movie. It couldn't have been any better. I'm currently trying to talk Mark into going to see it again!! He hasn't read any of the series, yet he loves the movies. So you know it's good if my big, strong Airmen loves them!

I do believe I'll be re-reading Eclipse soon! I just adore Edward, Jacob & Bella! If you've never read this series, I highly recommend it. I know it sounds stupid (vampires and werewolves and love?) but it's along the same line as Harry Potter. Good always wins, and it's beautiful! Check it out!!

Discussion: While reading the book, I was always on "Team Edward" and felt like Jacob was in the way and slightly annoying. But after seeing the movie, dagumit, now I feel like I'm halfway on Team Jacob now! Did anyone else experience this!? I mean, I was sitting in my seat just begging Bella to pick Jacob (even if it's only for a little while) even though I knew she wouldn't (duh). I saw an interview on TV saying that they're already finished with filming Eclipse..!? If so, yahoo! I can't wait! Oh -- I also am seriously looking forward to the "pillow scene" that will appear in the 4th movie. If you know what I mean.

I've been hiding it for WAY too long:

Hear ye, hear ye! I have a very important announcement to make:

My sweet nephews, Clayton and Hudson, are going to be
BIG BROTHERS!

I have a niece or nephew due June 10th, 2010! Sprout is at 11 weeks gestation and growing like a weed. And also making my sister utterly nauseated.

We're all so excited!

..what, you didn't think I was typing up these baby product posts for nothing, did you!?

Heck no -- I look out for my big sis! :)

Two of the best days of my life:

I love being an aunt.

Have you ever?: Gross Edition

My first (and only) Have You Ever post can be found HERE. But today, I have a new installment just for you...

I like to call it: Have You Ever?: Gross Edition

Have you ever gotten stuck in your door? Well, I have. A few days ago, I got stuck to our kitchen door. Like, I can't even make this up. My butt was stuck to our door. I was holding the door open for Mark, who was carrying something in (??) and I tried to go in. And I couldn't. My butt was stuck!! I tried to tug to free myself, but nope. Nada. Nothing. I started to call for Mark..

Me: Mark! HELP! I'm stuck to the door!

Mark: You're what?!!

Me: I'm stuck TO the door! I'm not even kidding. I can't move!

Mark: Ok.. I'm coming.. let me put this up..

Me: NO REALLY, I CAN'T MOOOOVE (dying with laughter)

(Mark comes to the rescue, sees me, and starts laughing hysterically..)

(Then we both start laughing so hard that I can't even see straight. I almost pee on myself. And all the while, I'm STILL stuck to the door)

He unfastens my blue jeans from the door hinge thing, and I'm freeeeee!

What? That's never happened to you? Oh. Well, okay.

Have you ever run from your bathroom (naked) onto your bed and cried with fear? On Wednesday, we decided to go to Williamsburg to shop! Mark took his shower first and then told me the bathroom was ready for me. I walked in and I saw it: a gigantic cockroach on our shower curtain. I stood there in fear and then BOLTED to our bedroom, crawled in bed, and covered up with our blanket. And then I screamed:

Me : MAAAAAAAAAAARK! COME HEEERE! HURRY! EMERGENCY! EMERGENCY!

Mark: klagjogjklgj What is it?!?!!?

Me: BUGGGGGG!!!!!!!! IN THE BATHROOM!!!!!!!!!!

(Mark darts upstairs to the rescue and searches the bathroom)

Mark: I don't see anything.

Me: Um, there was DEFINITELY a big bug in there ((Note: I did not tell him what it looked like. So, when he DID find it & kill it, I could quiz him on exactly what it looked like.. just to make sure he killed the right one.))

Mark: Oh. Ok. I see it! *Random gag noise from Mark's mouth*

Toilet: Flussssssh

Mark: ... It was a cockroach.. I got it.. it's all clear now!

..ugh...

Have you ever leaped over your couch and darted up the stairs like a stunt double? Well, I did last night. Picture it: Mark and Piper just went to bed. It's 10pm. There are a couple lights on, but it's pretty dim. The house is quiet. I look over and see a brown blob on our striped rug. I eye it, and my blood pressure skyrockets. Oh, good heavens, please don't let it be what I think it is.

And then it moved.

IT WAS ANOTHER COCKROACH. TWO DAYS IN A ROW. WHAT THE FUDGE!?

I slammed my laptop shut, sat up straighter than a stick, and looked around. Meanwhile, Mr. Cockroach is skurrying around my rug like a crazy bug. (Hey, that rhymed). I grabbed my cell phone, Dr. Pepper chapstick, and LEAPT (leaped?) over the couch like a stunt double. If only Mark could have seen my mad moves.. he would have been so impressed. Well, I've never climbed stairs so fast in my life.

I'll just go ahead and admit that I'm a big baby when it comes to bugs. But I don't feel bad, because ALL of my friends are just as bad. Plus, I'm used to seeing bugs (from Kentucky), but I've NEVER seen a cockroach in real life. So... Mark and I aren't used to it. And we bought a gigantic pack of roach hotel things AND it came with two egg killer hotels (disgusting...). This place is creepin me out. I miss Kentucky, where I only had to worry about skeeters & flies.

A few weeks ago, Dr. Oz said that if we see more than one cockroach in our house, it means that we have thousands in our walls. SICK!!! He also said that we are all highly allergic to them and they leave feces everywhere. Totally and utterly disgusting. UGH.

This, quite possibly, might win the gold medal for being the nastiest blog post I have ever written. Unfortunately.

PS. CLICK HERE to read about the type of cockroach we have -- the Palmetto bug. It hisses, bites, flies, and isn't afraid of anything. Humans are highly allergic, and they leave their dead skin and feces everywhere. IT'S TERRIBLE.

Slings, Wraps, & Carriers: An Unofficial Guide

I like to use my blog for three things:
  1. Personal Life Stuff
  2. Product Reviews
  3. Info to help others

Today, I'm combining all 3 into a little thing I liked to call: Slings, Wraps, & Carriers: An Unofficial Guide

A lot of my friends are pregnant and/or have little ones. There are tons of carriers on the market, so I'm going to list of a few of my favorites, list the price & its benefits, as well as the company website. In no particular order:

1. Moby Wrap: By far, the most popular wrap-style carrier on the market. The big difference here is that you use both shoulders and your back to carry your baby. With the Moby Wrap, there are no rings, velcro, or little straps. The weight is distributed evenly, so it's more comfortable. The wrap feels just like a t-shirt. Since the baby is placed right in the middle of your body, between your breasts, this wrap can be used for Kangaroo Care. There are over 9 ways to use the Moby Wrap, and it can even hold twins! The only downfall might be that it could be difficult to figure out. After all, it's up to you to figure out how to wrap it around your body. It's $39.95. It has got to be one of the cheapest carriers on the market. Here are a few pictures of the multiple ways to wear the Moby Wrap:

----------------------------------------------------

2. Kangaroo Korner Pouches & Slings: There is no way I could do this brand justice. There are dozens of different types of slings & pouches. They offer a different one for different ages, uses, climates, etc. My two favorites are the Adjustable Fleece Pouch & the All Seasons Adjustable Pouch. The only difference is the material -- if you live in a cold climate, you'd opt for the fleece pouch. The neat thing about Kangaroo Korner is that you get to choose your fabric. On the downside, your size (small, medium, large, xlarge) and dominant hand diminishes your available fabrics. Also, different fabrics are more stretchy than others -- and the stretchier they are, the more comfortable it will be for you & your child. This is the easiest sling ever. Your baby can lay down as an infant (and even nurse in that position) or can sit up and look out at the world. If you wear this sling correctly (high and in the middle of your body), it will eliminate back pain. They sell for $62.

Plus, MckMama loves them:

and so does Small Fry. That's Small Fry in the above picture, and here she is taking care of her baby, Ruby:

If that isn't enough to make you run out and buy them, I don't know what is.

----------------------------------

3. Maya Wrap: This unconventional wrap is also popular among hip moms. This wrap uses a ring to tighten or loosen the material. This wrap, too, can be used with newborns and toddlers alike. It also has a cute little spot to store keys, a wallet, chapstick, etc. Personally, I think this wrap looks impossible to do. I've read mixed reviews -- the gist being that it's really difficult to get the hang of it.. but, once you do, you love it. There are different slings made by this company, as well, but my favorite is the Lightly Padded Sling. I've watched the instructional video on their website, and I don't think I could figure it out. Plus, I don't know about you, but I don't think I could deal with that huge lump of fabric hanging in front of me. They're $65.95, and you get to choose your material.

oh, and MckMama likes this one too:

--------------------------------------------

4. Ergo Baby Carrier: The top favorite, according to lots of moms! It's also, reportedly, the most comfortable of all slings and carriers on the market. The neat thing about the Ergo is that it's super easy to put on. You don't have to slip your baby in the carrier, but rather, you fasten it around your baby. So, if you already had a sleeping baby in your arms, you could easily pull up the shoulder straps, and your baby would already be in the carrier. Did that make sense? Clear as mud? Good. It's totally fool-proof. It doesn't get any easier than this. You can wear your baby on the front or on your back. It comes with a "hood" do support your baby's heavy head when he/she falls asleep. The company has made different instructional videos to show you how to wear your baby different ways. Click HERE to watch the videos. They're expensive: $105 each, so start saving now! However, users report that it is THE most comfortable carrier on the market, so you would be able to carry your baby all day.

---------------------------------------------

5. Mei Tai Baby: This type of carrier goes back hundreds of years and finds its roots in Asia. Basically, it's a square piece of fabric with straps on all four corners. It, too, can be worn on the front or back and ranges from holding newborns to toddlers. You can also interchange the fabric that you choose! So you aren't stuck with a floral design once you have a son. And you aren't stuck with baby boy blue once you have a daughter. They are pretty cute, and are reportedly pretty comfy too! They're $79. If you want a cute fabric insert, that's $25 extra. Pricey, but cute!

-------------------------------

Ok. I'm exhausted. I was going to post about Heavenly Hold Action Baby Carriers & Hot Slings. I'm pooped. Whatever you do, at least by one of these baby carriers. Baby wearing (and attachment parenting) is good for you and your little one. Plus, your hands will be free to do other things! They would rather be held close to you (mom or dad) any day of the week, rather than sitting in a car seat or bouncy seat. What could be better than being snug as a bug in a rug next to mommy? :) I don't have a favorite brand (yet) because I've never used any of these. Since I don't have a baby. But, if any of you have, let me know what your favorite carrier is!

Man, I just cannot get enough of baby products!
