an untrue limerick about a pregnant lady

There once was a lady named Shannon
Who liked to go swimmin' & tannin'
Fingers started to wrinkle
& then she had to tinkle
So she shot out of the water like a canon**

**Not a true story. But nothing rhymes with my name. Although my fingers did wrinkle, so it's kinda sorta true!

Nearly 26 weeks pregnant!

So have you ever tried to swim with a big ol' belly? No? Well, it feels like swimming with a watermelon duck taped to your abdomen. It's a really weird phenomenon. I feel like she sinks me to the floor of the pool!

We definitely prefer the backstroke. Or, at I like to call it, "swimming on my back!"

:)

Dear Baby,

You sure like to make yourself known these days. On a regular basis, you like to practice gymnastics in my belly and find it amusing to make my entire belly shake and move. Daddy likes to watch you roll around and do flips - and he likes to feel you even more! Your two most favorite things are sermons at church and when I lay down on my back -- then you're guaranteed to move!

You make my ribs feel bruised and sore, and I feel like my stomach just can't get any bigger (although I know it will!) And my hips? Why, I had no idea that hip pain & pregnancy go together like peas and carrots (or something). At night, I flop around like a fish -- but luckily, Daddy and Piper sleep like the dead, so they never notice a thing!

Sometimes (okay, quite often), Daddy likes to stop me, grab my belly, and talk to you. He calls you "Addie Paddie" and likes to tell you that he loves you. It's the cutest thing I've ever seen. My belly button is almost no longer a hole, and we think it's a pretty funny sight!

Dad & I agree that our marriage has never ever ever been better than now! :) It's the most fun time in our lives, and we are sooo in love and happy to be together! We talk about you every single day and daydream about what you'll be like. I think you'll be born with light brown (nearly blonde) hair, and I think you'll look just like your dad. He has no idea what you'll look like, but he hopes you inherit my curls!

We're about three months from meeting you, and I wish time would slow down! At times, I really want to meet you now, but I also want to get everything ready for your arrival. We looooove you and are looking so forward to sleepless nights, lots of spit up, poopy diapers, and endless snuggles :)

how I shop for groceries.

A long, long time ago (okay, like, last year), I had no idea how to shop for groceries. I would just wheel the cart down the aisle and throw in anything that looked good. And I would just hope that I could create meals from my weird variety of groceries.

And then I became a better at my role as a wife (snicker snicker) and researched the best, and most cost-effective, way of buying groceries! I'm really not sure if everyone in the world does it this way, or if it's just me. No clue. But it's a great system, and I'm never going back to my old laissez-fair way of shopping!

First of all, I get a little pen and paper out, and I map out every meal we will have for two weeks. Lunch is a lot more laid back, but I strategically plan our suppers. Once I've made a list of each meal, I then decide how much meat we will need to prepare it all. Not only do we get exactly the amount of meat we want, but it's a lot easier to thaw meat when you know what you're having for dinner. This way, we never ever let meat ruin, because each pound of meat serves a purpose.

Capish?

..So, we go grocery shopping twice a month. For you military folk out there, we first go to the commissary to buy our animal products (read: milk, cheese, and meat). We do NOT buy our eggs at the commissary, as they are much, MUCH cheaper at Walmart. And just as good. I'm talkin' over a dollar cheaper at Walmart. Make note.

We also make a list of all the things we need, even down to the amount of snacks! It's a zillion times more easy to shop for groceries when you're reading off a list. Things go MUCH faster than if you're mindlessly wandering up and down the aisles and trying to imagine what you'd like.

A lot of recipes, we've discovered, don't need as much meat as they say. For instance, we actually prefer to cook Hamburger Helper with only half a pound of ground beef. Same goes for homemade spaghetti and homemade chili. This allows you to get two meals out of one pound, and it's much healthier! (Everyone knows that Americans eat too much meat anyway!)

So, uh, there you have it. Pretty simple, right? Like I said, the whole universe might do things like this, and I would never even know. But it works for us -- it saves time and money. We have a little dry/erase board on our refrigerator. I list all of the possible meals we can have, and Mark chooses what he wants before he goes to bed. That way, I'm able to thaw our meat and have a nice hot meal ready for him when he walks through the door.

(PS. I love my life as a stay-at-home-wife for this very reason. And he does too!)

Oh, and in case you're interested about what we'll be preparing for the next 9 days...
-grilled chicken with sweet potato bundles and creamed corn
-spaghetti with garlic bread
-tacos with Mexican rice
-chicken fingers, mashed potatoes, and green beans
-chicken & rice casserole
-biscuits and gravy with sausage and fried potatoes
-hamburgers with potato cheese bundles
-blueberry pancakes with bacon and scrambled eggs
-Hamburger Helper (my least favorite...)

***By the way, Crown Financial actually recommends only grocery shopping once every two weeks. So this is a proven method of saving money on your grocery bills! We do have to stock up on things, such as buying 3 gallons of milk at a time, but it keeps us from running back to the store every few days for missed items. The List works wonders - I promise!

our well-behaved dog.

Piper is the apple cheese nip of our eyes. We decided in August of 2009 that I needed a dog. I was bored, lonely, and Mark was away at tech school. I knew a dog would be just the thing for me! I tossed around a few ideas on which breed I should go with, and I almost decided on a Basset Hound, but then I found a Westie breeder! I even hosted my own little name poll, in which we took none of your advice and ended up getting a female!

And within a few days, I located a breeder, visited her litter, and met Piper for the very first time. We were sneaky about it, but I posted a little hint when Clayton drew her picture.

We wrapped her in a towel and brought her home. She was so small that I couldn't tell whether or not she was urinating in the grass. Because, well, her squat wasn't really a squat at all. She pretty much sat on the grass at all times. We were instantly in love, and Mark enjoyed many Skype dates with his newest puppy daughter.

Those puppy days were rough. She seemed to go non-stop, and I had to keep a constant eye on her. But those puppy days flew by. Before I knew it, she was a little lady. And, boy, she sure had our hearts.

Piper is what I like to call the adaptable* dog. Her only mission in life is to please myself and Mark. She is super-dee-duper attached to the both of us. She sleeps between us each night and buries her head (yes, BURIES) underneath one of our bodies. Two days ago, I woke up with her head on my chest. I'm like her mother hen, I suppose.

She would never ever wake me up. Often times, I wake up in the morning to find her staring at me. Who knows how long she stares at me, patiently waiting for me to wake. But gosh I love my dog. Piper knows how to sit, stay, lay, and pose for a camera like a pro.

My favorite thing about her? She scoots up to me on the couch, taps me with her paw, and looks into my eyes, asking for a scratch on the head. If I stop too soon for her liking, she will tap me again.

We are so smitten with our dog. Sometimes we like to say that she is our, ahem, puppy soul mate. Sometimes we just lay in bed and snuggle her and talk about our everlasting love for our pup. I know, I know. We might sound whack. But she's part of the family!

And she sure is one well-behaved dog:

Right now she's snuggled next to my leg -- could we have asked for a better dog? :)

the day I got Piper!

*Adaptable: The adaptable dog is easy to handle and cooperative. His submissive nature will have him continually looking to his master for leadership. This pup is easy to train, reliable with children, and though he lacks self confidence makes a high quality family pet. He is usually less extroverted than an outgoing pup but his demeanor is gentle and affectionate.

stream of consciousness: a wonderful day

Graydon is so cute. I could eat him with a spoon. I love that he has enough hair to "style," eyes bluer than the ocean, and a face just like Clayton's. Mmmm baby love.

Mark got home early today, due to the upcoming holiday, so we made the most of it and went on our bi-monthly trip to the grocery store. I got 4 tomatoes and 2 peaches, and I'm very excited about it. It clearly doesn't take much to excite me.

Afterward, we decided (on a whim) to get Chinese food, which we hadn't had in over a year. Then we trotted off to Barnes and Noble so I could look at children's books. I found a book called "Daddy's Girl" that made me cry in the middle of the bookstore. The little girl on the cover even looks like a kid we'd have - decked out in curly hair and all! I also decided that I could spend $5,000 on books alone for our little girl and still want more...

We're Going On a Bear Hunt
The Little Engine That Could
The Very Hungry Caterpillar
Guess How Much I Love You
Caps for Sale
Corduroy
The Rainbow Fish

...And the list continues. Forever.

So the trip to Barnes and Noble was fantastic, and I was reminded of some VERY awesome books from my childhood. And then, do you know what we did? Why, we went to see Eclipse, of course! ...I'm an avid Twilight fan. And, though Mark's never read the books, he loves he movies.

The movie was fantastic, of course. I'm still irritated that she picked Edward in the end, but I won't get into that on my blog. We did see a preview for Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows, and it looked five billion times better than Eclipse. Just sayin.

Tomorrow, we're going swimming and stuff. We're eagerly counting down the days until we're back in Kentucky (20!)
