more about dogs...

What the fudge are Basset Hound puppies doing on our blog? I have no idea. I have a slight obsession with dog breed-searching. I can't help it. I'm a planner.

Upon much researching and digging through classified ads around the Hampton area, we've come to a sad conclusion: Westies are expensive. Nevertheless, we are sticking to our $400 budget - and we don't care what you think about it!

Mark made the announcement tonight that, as a child, he had a: German Sheppard, Chow Chow, Doberman Pincher, full hair Chihuahua, Basset Hound, and a Husky. Uh - I had no idea about any of this. Psh. I don't even KNOW my own husband! Who did I marry, anyway!? :]

Westies, in general, range around $800. Basset Hounds range around $200. Bassets are supposed to be awesome pets for families - great temperament, sweet, loving, cuddly, non-aggressive, and great with new babies. Ahem.

So now that breed has entered the category of acceptable breeds. I've emailed 3 breeders of Westies tonight, so hopefully at least one of them will call me back. Breeders are really getting on my nerves! ..No offense to them. But we can't get ANYONE to answer their phone or return an email. Sheesh!!!

Any thoughts on Basset Hounds? Any experience? Mark says his was cuddly and lazy and amazing. That's the kind of dog we want!

  1. My sister has 2 basset hounds. She used to have 4, but when she had her baby she thought that 4 was a bit much (they only have a 2 bedroom house!) so she found a home for the 2 to go together. They're really sweet dogs and really funny too! My sister's 2 remaining dogs are great with her baby.

  2. aww, great!!! do they howl? online it said that SOME of them will howl if left alone for extended periods of time. but that's the only setback.

  3. I'm sorry the Westie isn't working out so far. They are expensive and worth the price tag, but I think most breeders really jack up prices.
Basset hounds are so so cute. I thought they howled a lot though? Wasn't Snoopy a hound??

No, he was a beagle, so nvm.

I hope one of the breeders contacts you!

  4. Well I haven't read that they really howl. I just read that they CAN howl if they are left alone for long periods of time. Mark's basset hound didn't howl. Mark would prefer a Westie, and I would prefer a Westie, but now we are open to BHs. We're really excited. And we've added Chester to our naming list. After Mark suggested: Boo Boo, Moses, Ruffles, Professor, Einstein, Steve, and Roger... ugggh... we liked Chester :] and I like Hank. He thinks Ollie doesn't sound like a BH. Decisions, decisions...

  6. Husky? when did we have a husky?? Thats a new one to me. We did have a cockapoo named Lady, but I bet he doesnt remember her. And Harley (our late bassett hound)did howl when someone drove up into our driveway. He was an awesome dog! I gonna get one when whenever we get settled somewhere.

  7. We had a bassett and it was the best dog ever...Dave said he would never have another dog because none could compare with "Barney". He was good natured and very loving!!

  8. Barney!! I remember you having that dog!! Did he eat a lot? Mark says Basset Hounds eat a lot, so it'd be expensive to feed them... but nothing we can't handle. And did Barney howl? I'm getting excited, because we're really liking Basset Hounds now!!!

  9. Yes, basset hounds do howl, but I think it depends on the dog--for example, one of my sister's dogs (out of the original 4) howled a ton, whereas another one (one she has kept still) doesn't at all.

And yes, they eat a lot too! Be careful, they'll eat anything. One time, one of my sister's dogs ate a plastic hanger and nearly needed surgery for it (don't ask). Just don't leave anything out that you don't want them to eat and you should be fine though.

They really are cool dogs and have awesome senses of humor. The big floppy ears are so cute!

  10. You should adopt a puppy :(

Look at this precious little girl! She's at the BGWC Humane Society right now...baby basset hound mix: http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=14274374

They have some adorable beagles too. That's just the BG area...other areas around probably have westies or basset hounds come through too. Much cheaper, and much more meaningful to adopt one than pay a ton to a breeder who may be mistreating animals :(

I don't mean any of that to sound judgmental, I promise! This is just something that's very dear to my heart for some reason!

  11. :) We aren't ready to get a dog until September when we've already moved. I just don't think it's fair to a dog to move it 12 hours in the car and try to house train it in TLF (temp living facilities) and then our new home.. sooo we're waiting til we get here. but we will definitely check the shelters there. I've been trying to look online at shelters in the area, but I don't really know the names of them, so I've just been looking on petfinder and ehh :| it's hard.

  12. That makes sense! As long as you're looking at the possibility of adopting, that makes my heart smile! :) I really hope I didn't sound judgmental earlier!

  13. Shannon, I thought petfinder is very hard too. We really wanted to rescue a dog, but it had to be little since our yard isn't large enough to be fair for a big dog. So we looked on PetFinder everyday waiting for a little one to show up, and everytime we would call or check, the ones we were interested in were already gone and they just forgot to take them off the site. It stinks, but maybe you'll have better luck! :)
