"Why allow Halloween to be a pagan holiday in commemoration of the powers of darkness? Fill the house or church with light; sing and celebrate the victory of Christ over darkness." -Richard Foster
What do you think about Halloween!? Read this interesting article about Christianity and Halloween!
Oh, and in a little over a week, my two nephews will be dressing up! Clayton will be a pirate captain of a ship, and Hudson is going as his "first mate!" I know you can't wait for the pictures of my Hudsie in his skivvies!

I don't get Halloween. I think it's fun and cute for little ones, but if you think about it, it's really silly. "Hi, I'm your neighbor's kid, standing on your porch dressed as a bumblebee, will you give me some food please?" LOL-it's just weird!
ReplyDeleteHalloween provides THE BEST teaching tools ALL year!! I don't know if you recall, but after Halloween, there is a PLETHORA of things to do with the class.. especially math!!! I recall having an *entire day* doing activities with weight, measurements, graphing candy, etc. and it's a great & creative tool!! I also remember bringing in a small pumpkin and weighing it using those little measurement cubes.. wow, the list just goes on and on!
ReplyDeleteThis was totally off subject, BUT it goes to show that Halloween DOES have some positive elements :] I'll definitely let my kids trick or treat, but preferably at a church function. I see nothing wrong with letting my kid dress up as something acceptable (once I went as an old lady! It was Halloween DAY, and I didn't have a costume!! My grandma *gave me her clothes, jewelry, and purse* and sent me on my way! BWHAHAHA!). Such good memories :] I trick or treated and came out juuuuust fine!
I trick or treated too-and I plan on letting my kids do it. I agree that there are some definite ways you can use the holiday to teach lots of things, and it is excellent for a child's imagination. I was just saying that the concept of trick-or-treating is REALLY funny if you think about it.
ReplyDeleteChris and I don't agree with "celebrating" Halloween and won't let our kids dress up or trick or treat. We see it as a pagan holiday that Christians have "accepted" and try to make it not look as bad as it really is. Kind of like Easter. And the Easter bunny and hunting for eggs. Those are just *OUR* convictions, though.
ReplyDeleteI do, however, like the quote you gave!
I didn't trick-or-treat when I was little. I think MAYBE once. At the mall. But we did wake up to a bag of candy, and give out candy at night.
ReplyDeleteI trick-or-treated when I was a kid, and we have taken our little one trick-or-treating also. I had never given much thought to Halloween until I became a mom, but now I find myself having all these different questions about it. This morning, I heard a talk show host saying that it kind of goes against everything we teach our children. We teach them not to go up to people they don't know (a.k.a strangers), but on Halloween they are going to everyone's house, with probably 90% of them being people they have never even seen. We teach them not to accept things from people they don't know but on that night they are taking candy from stranger after stranger. It kind of gives me a new perspective on Halloween. Not saying I will quit taking my son to trick-or-treat but I do have more of an awareness to the whole concept and will never think about it the same way. Thanks Shannon for opening discussions on this topic!
ReplyDeleteWe don't think of trick or treating as dark really...I mean I know that Halloween is supposed to be all dark and stuff, but we just dont really think about it like that I guess..hehe...This year Mado is going to be THE Scarecrow and Jakk the Tin Man!!! I just like seeing kids dress up!
